Yeng Keng Hotel's Hainanese Cuisine (Invited Review)

Yup! Yeng Keng serves Hainanese cuisine too!

Note : The price below has included portion for 10 pax since we are in a group of 11  pax. The dishes shown in the photos below are catered for 10 pax.

Spring Rolls : RM12.00 (per portion of 2 pcs) / RM24.00 (for 4 pcs)

The photo shown below is for 4 pcs. The price of the spring rolls can be quite damaging mainly due to the seafood items.

Ingredients: crab meat, chicken meat, prawn, black mushroom, yambean, carrot, onion.

The sauce is a mixture of oyster sauce, Lea & Perrines,  A1 sauce, tomato sauce and HP sauce.

Hainannese Mushroom Soup : RM10.00 (per portion for one person) / RM45.00 for big bowl serving of 10 persons.

This hainanese mushroom soup is very different from what I used to eat with main ingredients being glass noodles and button mushrooms. This one is very rich in fermented black bean taste.

Hai Onn Restaurant(海安饭店) II

This round I managed to order all the dishes that I think which are value-for-money yet delicious, unlike previous visit.

The day I went fell on the last few days of Nine Emperor Gods festival (九皇爷), therefore the customers coming for lunch were not many. Hmm…..next time got to consider this sort of period to visit Hai Onn! :)

The serving size of dishes served here although small,  ngam ngor hao mei!

Sambal fried kangkung - This round we were served 5 pcs of prawns with ‘countable’ stalks of eng chai. Ha!  妹仔大過主人婆hor?! :)

Chicken Chop. I believe this one is A LOT BETTER than the pork chop loh.

Hainanese Fish Curry. Need not elaborate further, a must order! :) [...]

裕隆茶室 (Sungai Tiram) Roti Bakar

裕隆茶室 (Sungai Tiram) Roti Bakar

I appreciated this kopitiam a lot. Without this kopitiam, I won’t be able to enjoy good toasts at south-west region of Penang as it’s simply too inconvenient to travel down to town in order to have just 2 pieces of good toasts for breakfast.

Serving is considered fast even though the kopitiam is always packed with customers.

See? Hainanese bread could do magic with just plain butter! [...]

Hai Onn Hainanese Dishes need Patience

Hai Onn Restaurant (海安饭店)@ Burmah Road

“Why not we go to Hai Onn for zhu char since it’s already 11 something?!” I proposed after getting some errands done in the morning.

This is a place that brought me lots of childhood memories.

It’s 11.45am.

“What time do you start to serve zhu char?”
“Oh, our kitchen starts to work at about 12 something.”
“Alright……” (At that moment, I thought I was queued as the 2nd table…)

Guess what? I have finished reading newspaper and eating the lor bak and still I need to wait for them to serve two other tables who were apparently earlier than me.

One table is an elderly couple whereas another one is a vacant table but ‘reserved’.You can see them serving the dishes to that vacant table but covering all up with plates since no one has arrived yet. *Grrrrr………..*

Finally our dishes were served at around 12.55p.m. I pity another uncle who didn’t aware of such long waiting time. He came alone and didn’t expect that he needed to wait for >45 mins for one person’s meal. I heard the taukeh soh explained to him about the ‘waiting tradition’.

Nevertheless, those dishes served below immediately swept away my ‘anger’.

I love the Hainanese curry fish with pungent lemongrass taste. [...]

Shing Kheang Aun (新瓊安) 鹹魚肉

The must-order Hainanese curry fish aka “tao teh hu” in Shing Kheang Aun – Last time got customer tagged along therefore I missed shooting the photo. I missed it during my last visit , again this visit. :(

The serving size is THE SAME no matter you come in 2 persons, 4 persons, or 6 persons OK?! Therefore if you come in bigger group then it’s advisable for you to order more dishes. :)

Kiam Hu Bak (鹹魚肉) with plum sauce – A must order too! Very appetizing, swee swee tee tee. :)

Too Thor Thng – no need order lah, I cook one tastes a lot nicer OK?! This one only tasted pepper nia.

Chicken Chop – I still prefer the Hai Ann @ Burmah Road one.

Bang Kuang Char – boh kao jip bee, certainly not up to your standard if you are a bang kuang char critic.

I hope that I will have the chance to order the Hainanese Curry Fish the next time and SNAP till puas puas! :P
