Malabar Restaurant (Invited Review)

This is a new restaurant at the corner shop lot after the Lorong Kampung Malabar, serving Thai & Nyonya cuisine.

Asam Pedas (RM8.00 – 2 fish) My rating : 8/10

This is an absolutely appetizing dish. It would be greater if heated with candle warmer during serving.

Thai Style Roast Chicken (RM11.00) My rating : 8/10

Spice- flavoured roast chicken, a good choice for those who like moist gravy type instead of dry belacan chicken.

Deep Fried Belacan Chicken (RM12.00) My rating : 7/10

Loh Bak (RM8 – 2pcs) My rating : 6/10

Braised Garlic Pepper Pork Ribs (RM12.00) My rating : 6/10

Pork Trotter with Vineger (RM16.00) My rating : 6/10

A bit too sourish and sweet to my liking.

Some of the Chinese dishes that are serving during CNY period.

Chicken Soup with Herbs (RM26.00) My rating : 7/10

An aromatic steamed herbal chicken.

Stir Fried Thai Style Mayonnaise Prawns with Broccoli (RM22.00) My rating : 8/10

Otak Otak (RM4.00 each) My rating : 9/10

A bit pricey but recommended!

Fried Kangkung (RM9.00) My rating : 7/10

I like the fragrant unique belacan/shrimp paste of this kangkung dish.

Malabar Belanda Eggs (RM4.50 – 2 eggs) My rating : 7/10

Thai Style Beef Koay Teow (RM9.50) My rating : 6/10

Kasturi Lime with Sour Plum Drink (RM2.80) My rating : 9/10

A recommended drink for all! Refreshing for hot day and when having Thai food.

Lazybone Home-cooked Tom Yum

11 Dec

Lazybone Home-cooked Tom Yum

At times I felt like eating something appetizing and sourish, but not too spicy. Therefore I have been thinking …..Hmm….It would be great uh if I could polish myself up with a presentable Tom Yam dish.

How about the Tom Yam soup base? It could be tedious if I were to prepare it from zero. Well, the lazybone here thought of trying the ready-made Tom Yam paste available in the market. What could be easier than just dumping everything into the pot then when you need not worry about the paste?!

There I went with my homecooked Tom Yum, by adding some extra ingredients to enhance the kicks!

I tried two brands of Tom Yum paste.

One is Peace brand Thai Tom-Yum Instant Sour Shrimp Paste. Another one is Thai Boy Thai Tom Yum Soup Paste. The former one is more sourish.

I did not add much spices except :

The kaffir lime leaves (daun limau purut) (available mostly in Malay sundry shops).

Firstly I have to make sure that I can get this, then only I will start to search for other ingredients.  I added one stalk for the fragrance. I simply love its smell!

I added 4 to 5 stalks of lemongrass (serai),  some curry flower (bunga kantan) (optional) and curry leaves (optional).

Raw ingredients in general. Most of the raw meat ingredients, I poached first and set aside, to avoid spoiling the taste of the soup.

Onions , tomatoes, lady fingers, oyster mushrooms, dried mushrooms and cabbages.  The spices and vege ingredients – I dumped in firstly. [...]

Khun De Thai Restaurant

Khun De Thai Restaurant

At last there was a reason for us to have a group ‘makan’ here at Khun De Thai. 6 pax of us.

The sambal was unique.

Miang Kam 一包一口 (RM10.00)

I found that the lime and ginger given were too little leh.

Tom Yum (Red) / Tom Yam Nam Khon 红冬炎海鲜 (RM18.00)

Not the sourish type  but somewhat spicy (to certain people).

Deep Fried Fish with Chilli Sauce / Plah Tod Lard Prik 辣椒酱炸鱼 (RM38.00) [...]

Tree Monkey of Tropical Spice Garden (Invited Review)

Tree Monkey @ Tropical Spice Garden, Teluk Bahang.

Last Sunday we in a group of ~20 pax (consisted of food bloggers and Penang bloggers) were invited and treated by the boss, Mr. PattKhor and the person-in-charge, Ms Wisakha, through coordination by Warren, CK Lam and Criz.

Let’s move on to explore what you could expect from the Tree Monkey!

Tree Monkey is a “Back To Nature” alfresco restaurant. It has just started its business recently on 30th Jul 2010 as a pork-free restaurant. It serves North Eastern Thai, Asian and Western cuisine (vegetarian is also available). Their chefs are from North East Thailand. The herbs used in preparing dishes are taken from the Spice Garden itself.

Tree Monkey is located beside the Tropical Spice Garden. Use this entrance and take a few minutes hike up and that will lead you to the restaurant.

Green. Wood. Peace in Rustic Garden.

It is a great place for those who like to to hang out in rustic and tranquil ambience. One who knows how to appreciate the art of wooden structure building should find this place interesting too as this restaurant was built without using nails. Their wooden furnitures are also imported from Chiangmai, Thailand.
