Tainan Restaurant 台湾小吃店(Invited Review)

Tainan Restaurant 台湾小吃店(Invited Review)

This is a 13-yr-old restaurant taken over by a young man last year. If you still recall, this is the first Taiwanese restaurant in Penang.

At this restaurant, you will not be seeing commercial type of typical taiwanese food, but the homecook style (blended with local taste) instead. If you are looking for a cheap and yet good meal, this probably suits you!

Saucy Chicken Rice 贵妃鸡饭 RM8

Sweet-based of sauce cooked with wolfberries/goji berry.

Taiwan Beef Noodle RM7

Ingredients : Beef (you will expect ngau lam and muscle here), pickled Chinese cabbage and pakchoy.

Beef is freshly bought from the market by the restaurant owner. Therefore you can let go the worry of consuming 黑心牛肉 from supplier.

Their noodles are flat version, unlike other Taiwanese restaurants in Penang.

Their soup base is very thick and resembles OXTAIL soup, non-spicy version. Therefore you are advised to bottom-it- up when it is served hot!

Beef Noodles of Kochabi lacking the umph!

Beef Noodles of Kochabi lacking the umph!

OIC….now it has opened up a new branch at Penang Times Square. There is an error on this sheet. 7 days a week was wrongly written as ‘全日无休 ’ ?! If ‘全日无休 ’ why got opening hours stated as 12 to 10pm?  It should be ‘全年无休 ’ la! :)

Beef Noodles  牛肉面 (RM9.50)

After tasting this bowl of beef noodles @ Kochabi, OH NO!!!! I really miss the beef noodles of Taipei Food Avenue @ Prima Tanjung! I think Taipei Food Avenue still serves the best among all these Taiwanese restaurants, including the 台湾风味情 @ Midlands / Gurney Plaza.

The serving here is without the salted vege (酸菜).  The salted vege is a real PLUS enhancing the taste of the beef noodles soup as served by Taipei Food Avenue.

The beef slices here are smaller but tender enough, still…..not as good as Taipei Food Avenue.

The soup base is very light in taste. Not as rich as in Taipei Food Avenue. [...]

台北 Taipei 101 台湾料理 Taiwan Cuisine

台北 Taipei 101 台湾料理 Taiwan Cuisine

I was attracted by GuangMing and friends’ recommendation – ‘cheap’  BUT is it good?! Let’s review and see.

I believe this is related to Mommy Wang as the back of their menu book was having the imprint of this wording. The Queensbay Mommy Wang outlet also has changed its name to 台北 Taipei 101 台湾料理.

招牌珍珠奶茶 (Pearl Milk Tea) RM3.50. Normal light pearl milk tea. Not consistent in the pearls’ texture from my two different visits. Once was having hardness in core and another time was very soft.

木瓜牛奶(Papaya Milk Shake) RM3.90 . Use the real papaya to blend therefore you can taste the healthy, rich and thick papaya juice.  Impressed.

招牌甘梅地瓜(Sweet Potato with Plum) RM4.00

Deep fried sweet potato then sprinkled with sour plum powder. One of the light snacks that impressed me too.

醉鸡砂煲饭 (Drunken Chicken Claypot Rice) RM8.90.

Using breast meat with thick and wine infused gravy. This type of drunken chicken is totally out of my expectation, but then RM8.90 only – what could I have expected more leh? :) [...]

600cc @ Prangin Mall

The last visit during 2007 wasn’t a good one.

Human, forget and forgive. I forgot how my last visit was. I tried again the other day at Prangin Mall. The zha jiang mian + drink set has increased from RM8 to RM11+. I personally think that the ‘minus-pork’ version has made this dish losing its attractiveness.

Tao Yuan @ Campbell Street

I ordered mang min for two persons. It came so little nia leh! :) Anyway, I found it too salty. Last time I like this dish very much as it resembles the ‘wanton noodles’ that I like, and also the wanton mee served by Ah-Go-Go stall @ Padang.

Wanton Mee @ Balik Pulau New Market Food Court

See? The last time I came (probably 2 yrs ago?!), I ordered this. Seriously I forgot how it taste, was it good or bad?! This round I ditched the curry mee (again!) and ordered this, again! I was disappointed. Only the bowl itself is having the kochabi feel, not the taste. :(

Kochabi Pork Steamboat

Kochabi Pork Steamboat

Kochabi Pork Steamboat @ Burmah Road

My first try on Kochabi pork steamboat was not a pleasant one. Why? allergic lah!

Pork Steamboat (RM18.00 nett)

One glance at it, a lot of frozen food and preserved food (the cause of allergy). This is not the type of steamboat I like. I like the Goh Huat Seng with charcoal and non-’All You Can Eat’ type.

Tainan Tan Tsai Noodle (Dry) (Set meal =RM13.80 nett) .Hmm…..not impressed lah.

The side dishes in the set like this will cost you ~RM4 extra compared to ala carte.
