Traditional English Afternoon Tea of The E & O Hotel

Traditional English Afternoon Tea @ 1885, The E & O Hotel

At 1885, Traditional English Afternoon Tea is served in an elegant setting starting with a selection of very thin sandwiches, like thinly sliced cucumber, smoked salmon and roast beef sandwiches. This is followed by scones with home-made strawberry jam, clotted cream and a selection of cakes.

I have finally made it during the first Sunday of July, with YY company. It was a delightful afternoon tea session after dragging for almost a year. *My goodness!*

The 1885 English Afternoon Tea . The photo above shows serving for two persons.

What surprised me the most is the sweetness level. All the cakes and tea pastries served here are not too sweet, just adequate. If it’s at other places, I would have easily turned ‘jilak‘ after consuming a few pieces.

The clotted cream is super fine and soft. Light-weighted, not creamy rich. Strawberry jam is mildly sweetened.

Scones and Finger Sandwiches.

Delicate cakes and yummy pastries.

Cakes are not too sweet, even for those chocolates and tarts.

Finger sandwiches stuffed with smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber and dill, roast beef and dill pickle with grain mustard. I personally prefer those with roast beef and cucumber. For those who don’t consume beef, you may substitute with cheese.

Small Pies

Creme Orange. A full-bodied Rooibos from South Africa with a creamy and delicate vanilla flavour and the pep of ripe oranges.I prefer this one to the one below. It was infused with a refreshing orange sense after brewed. Not sweet.

Sweet Berries. A creation with startling taste of ripe berries with large pieces of fruits and real juices. For me, this tasted a bit like tea infused with “mild ribena” taste. :)

Scones are soft, a bit sticky on teeth.

Pies are light-weighted.

Roast beef with dill pickle make this piece an appetizing combination.

I am planning a trip to E & O in the beginning of August so I tried to gather more information on the food served at E & O. Your post is indeed a great and helpful one. Thanks!

Hi Carrie, the cakes are served on a trolley? Can eat as many as we want or is there a limit to how many pieces one can take?

Well, I would say I learned new things from this blog post. It is good to know that the traditional English afternoon tea remains practiced. Certainly, the British are proud of this tradition.
